Getting to Tana Toraja

Getting to Tana Toraja isn’t difficult – but it can also be an adventure!

There is a small airport in Toraja’s main city, Rantepao. But flights are limited and often cancelled – Daud would strongly recommend travelling to Toraja by road.

The easiest way to get to Toraja is to arrive in Makassar, in the south of Sulawesi, and take an overnight coach from the city bus station.

It’s a long, eight-hour journey, but with luck you’ll fall asleep as you leave the grey sprawl of Sulawesi’s largest city, and wake up in green, luscious Toraja.

Daud can meet visitors when they arrive in Makassar airport, and help book the best coaches to Toraja.

Be warned: the coaches vary wildly in quality, and on cheaper buses you’ll be kept awake all night by the driver as he plays thumping dance music! But, if you pay a little extra, you’ll have a more comfortable and relaxing journey.

Daud can also arrange reliable and safe private transport from Makassar to Tana Toraja. Naturally, this is a more expensive option, but it can take the stress out of arriving in an unfamiliar city, and can be cost-effective if you’re travelling as part of a small group.
